A lot has been happening here at Abide. We had a fantastic turnout for our first annual celebration banquet and raised enough support for phase one of the remodel on our new maternity home.
That’s the other exciting news. Our offer to purchase a building from Cottonwood Christian Assembly Church had been accepted by their board, but we had to wait for their members to vote on it. God is so good! They voted unanimously to sell to us and make our home for homeless pregnant women become a reality.
I’ll be updating you in more detail soon about the banquet and the building, but right now I need to tell you about a recent report published by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
There’s one little bit of good news in it, but the rest is so disheartening. It’s the 2015 Abortion Report. The glimmer of hope is that abortions in the state of Arizona decreased by 245 for the year 2015.
Don’t get me wrong, that is a wonderful thing! That’s 20 fewer babies each month lost to abortion and 20 fewer women who have to carry that burden for the rest of their lives.
There is, however, the sobering reality of the numbers of abortions that did occur. A total of 12,655 in our state.
That’s 6 babies lost during every work hour of every business day, every week, every month, all year long. This means that for every 10 minutes I sit here at my desk today, a woman in Arizona has bought the lie that an abortion will solve her problem.
Who are these women? They’re our sisters, our friends, even our daughters.
Over half are in their twenties and just over half are unmarried. One in five are college educated and a third have had at least one previous abortion.
On an average of just over twice a month, the court was petitioned to allow an underage girl to get her abortion without parental consent, and pretty much every time that request was made, it was granted.
While the rate among high school aged girls decreased in 2015, it increased among girls aged 14 and under.
The Health Services report details the methods used on these girls and women, and although there is physical pain for the woman (and for the baby, death) – the longer lasting emotional and spiritual damage to the mother is a terrible and often unexpected burden for her to bear.
You can see the full 2015 Abortion Report for yourself – we’ve put the link in this post for you.
We pray God to continue to move on the hearts of people. To bring all to understanding. To restore in us an appreciation for all life. We can’t rely on any law or politician – this will always be a decision made one mother at a time.
Take our very first client at Abide, for example. Because she changed her mind and chose adoption instead of abortion, two sweet baby boys are now almost 4 months old. An adoptive family has been made complete. And one birth mom has the joy of knowing she chose life for her sons.
Thank you for praying with us and may God have mercy on us all.
